SIM Cards Fundamentals

How the subscriber identity module works as a smart card and as a platform, from its chip, contacts and file system to the subscription it carries. You will learn how a phone talks to the card, what the card stores and computes, how operators manage it after sale and how the eUICC receives profiles by remote provisioning.

Overview

SIM Cards Fundamentals is the fifth and last course of the Telecom Foundations path and builds on Telecom Fundamentals and above all on GSM Fundamentals, where the SIM was introduced as a subscription on a card. It starts with what a SIM is today: the road from the GSM SIM to the UICC platform with its USIM and ISIM applications, the eUICC and the eSIM, the form factors from removable cards to soldered chips, and what the card does for the subscription during a session. It then follows the smart-card hardware and its electrical interface, the answer to reset, the transmission protocols, the commands and status words that a phone exchanges with the card, and the file system of master file, dedicated files, application dedicated files and the key elementary files. Later modules cover the identities and subscription data on the card, the card's side of authentication with Milenage as an example algorithm set, the SIM Application Toolkit, over-the-air management with secured packets, and the eUICC with remote provisioning for consumer, machine-to-machine and IoT devices. The last module looks at manufacturing and personalisation, the operators and MVNOs that issue cards, and machines, IoT and integrated SIMs. The course ends with an interactive review that follows a new eSIM from QR code to first registration.

Learning Objectives
Explain how the SIM grew from a GSM application into the UICC platform with USIM and ISIM applications, the eUICC and the eSIM, and who specifies each layer
Describe the card's form factors, its hardware and its electrical interface, and how a phone starts a session with it
Read the commands and responses exchanged between a phone and a card, including status words and PIN handling
Navigate the card's file system and explain where the identities, network selection data and services of a subscription are stored
Describe the card's side of authentication in GSM, 3G, 4G and 5G as a procedure, with Milenage as an example algorithm set
Explain how the SIM Application Toolkit and over-the-air management let an operator use and update a card after sale
Describe the eUICC, its profiles and remote provisioning, and how cards are made, personalised and issued

Passing the final exam earns the SIM Cards Specialist achievement and counts towards the TelcoSec Telecom Foundations certification, which needs the final exams of all five Foundations courses: Telecom, PSTN, ADSL, GSM and SIM Cards Fundamentals. It shows you can explain how the SIM works as a smart card and as a platform, from its hardware, commands and file system to its side of authentication, over-the-air management and eSIM remote provisioning.

RequiredThe achievement is awarded for passing the SIM Cards Fundamentals final exam: 75 questions drawn from a bank of 150, with 70% needed to pass. Attempts are unlimited, with a 7-day wait between attempts. The module quizzes are practice and do not award the achievement on their own.
